Mister Blue

Cinnamon Bun

Mister Blue is a blue forest pixie and the leader of a small pixie gathering whose brief companionship gives Broccoli Bunch both practical protection and an important reprieve from solitude. First encountered as the brightest of roughly two dozen glowing pixies, he cannot communicate through ordinary speech, yet he becomes an effective guide, negotiator, travelling companion, and friend. His story is shaped by exchange: honey secures his escort, but the bargain develops into genuine affection before the road separates them again.

Identity and Introduction

Mister Blue first appears as the most conspicuous member of a clearing filled with pixies whose lights glow in every colour of the rainbow. He floats directly up to Broccoli Bunch, plants his hands on his hips, puffs out his chest, and announces himself with a chirp. When Broccoli uses Insight, the game-like identification reveals him as a blue forest pixie at level 6. The designation makes his apparent delicacy deceptive: he is two levels above Broccoli, even though his tiny size makes him look fragile rather than formidable.

His authority is communicated through gesture and group response rather than formal explanation. He points toward the surrounding forest, rejects Broccoli’s attempt to remain there, and appears pleased when Broccoli understands that he should leave. His speech consists of rapid chirps, chittering, and occasional sounds such as “bleek,” so communication requires pantomime, patience, and repeated interpretation. This limitation does not make him passive. He directs the other pixies, conveys decisions, leads Broccoli away from the road, and establishes the terms under which the traveller may continue through the forest.

The Honey Bargain

The relationship changes when Broccoli notices the pixies staring greedily at the jar of honey protruding from the bag. Rather than simply accept their demand for departure, Broccoli tests whether honey can become a form of payment. Mister Blue nods vigorously when asked whether pixies like it, then joins the others in a huddle while they deliberate. The scene turns a possible exclusion into a negotiation: Broccoli offers the remaining jar, and the pixies offer access and assistance in return.

Mister Blue makes the agreement intelligible by pointing in sequence toward Broccoli, the jar, the road, and himself. Broccoli eventually understands that he is promising an escort. The exchange is economically uneven in appearance but socially productive. Honey buys permission to remain in the forest a little longer, yet the bargain also allows Broccoli to regard the pixies as friends rather than obstacles. When Broccoli gives Mister Blue an unopened jar, the pixie leader uses magic to draw it from Broccoli’s grasp, dives head-first into it, and makes the hard honey briefly liquid before splashing in. The other pixies follow, eating with such enthusiasm that some become too sticky to fly. Mister Blue’s appetite is comic, but it also establishes the pleasure and trust surrounding the transaction.

After the feast, Mister Blue returns covered in honey, with one arm stuck in his mouth like a lollipop. He points down the route, and Broccoli accepts the invitation to proceed. His glance at the bag, followed by his licking of his lips, preserves the pixies’ greed as a running joke, but it does not cancel the mutuality of the arrangement. The honey has purchased more than a service: it has created a temporary social bond.

Guide to the Seven-Petal Candle Flower

Mister Blue proves his usefulness by leading Broccoli away from the road and through increasingly difficult woodland. He flies at a deliberately moderate pace, guiding Broccoli through brambles and up a steep hill where travel would have been impossible without Jumping between large rocks. Broccoli tries to retain a sense of the road’s direction in case the detour causes disorientation, but Mister Blue’s evident excitement overrides that caution.

His destination is a rocky overhang growing above healthy-looking dirt. There Broccoli discovers roughly three dozen Seven-Petal Candle Flowers, each with deep wine-red vines, faded crimson leaves, seven broad petals, a waxy central stem, and a faint blue flame burning above it. Mister Blue’s guidance therefore leads not merely to a picturesque clearing but to a significant botanical discovery. The flowers’ mixed scent of sulphur and oatmeal further marks them as unusual without making them repellent, while the blue flames echo Mister Blue’s own luminous identity.

The scene also clarifies the form of his companionship. Mister Blue cannot explain the flower verbally, so he communicates through movement, pointing, and triumphant circling. Broccoli supplies interpretation; Mister Blue supplies local knowledge and direction. Their partnership is consequently collaborative rather than hierarchical, despite the pixie leader’s higher level and command over the group.

Travelling Companionship and Parting

Mister Blue remains with Broccoli on the road after the forest encounter and becomes a good travelling companion. The two continue at a pace slower than Broccoli is accustomed to, even though Mister Blue could easily outpace the traveller. Broccoli recognizes that the delay is voluntary: the company is enjoyable enough that the inevitable separation is postponed. Their communication remains imperfect, but pantomime bridges the gap, allowing them to make do with chirps and gestures.

The departure becomes unavoidable when Mister Blue stops and confirms that their shared route has ended. Broccoli’s distress is not primarily logistical; it is the prospect of returning to loneliness. Broccoli has Orange as another companion, but their bond is still undeveloped, so Mister Blue’s presence has acquired unusual emotional weight in a short time. Broccoli leaves one filled jar of honey beside the road as a final gift, retaining one and a half jars for future use.

Mister Blue answers Broccoli’s wish for a hug by blinking into position and wrapping his arms across Broccoli’s chest. His arms cannot reach from one side to the other, but the inadequate scale of the embrace makes it more touching rather than less. He then backs away, gives Orange one last glare, waves, and flies into the woods with the honey jar floating behind him. The farewell converts the original bargain into a completed gift cycle: payment becomes parting tribute, and the escort ends with affection rather than mere contractual closure.

Narrative Role and Significance

Mister Blue occupies a small but structurally important role in Broccoli Bunch’s developing journey. He functions as a threshold guide into the forest, a local interpreter, and a companion who makes unfamiliar territory navigable without removing its strangeness. His inability to speak Broccoli’s language prevents easy exposition, while his gestures make communication an active achievement. The resulting scenes emphasize that friendship can emerge without shared language when both sides remain willing to interpret, offer, and respond.

His presence also contrasts with the more formal exchanges Broccoli encounters elsewhere. Leonard Chand’nuit negotiates payment for reconstructing a map; Dylan purchases flowers and pays for their delivery; the Exploration Guild binds membership to written terms and a fee; and Gunther later agrees to help with the rescue of Amaryllis only in exchange for a favour. Mister Blue’s honey bargain begins in the same practical logic, but it ends in an embrace and a lingering sense of loss. Through him, a transaction becomes companionship, and companionship becomes a remembered promise that the solitary road need not remain permanently empty.
